James Castle (1899-1977), born deaf and mute, learned to communicate and interact with the world around him via visual and tactile means. Untitled (Red Jacket) is an exemplary work by Castle. The repurposed Ranch-Way Feeds packaging not only is an ingenious use of material, but serves as a nod to his upbringing and surroundings on a farm. The simplistic and delicate shaping of the jacket's lapels and buttons, as well as the quick rendering of both pockets, create a clever representation of a familiar object.
