"Dans la peinture actuelle de Barré, le blanc prend une très grande importance. Il limite ses autres couleurs à l'ocre rouge et au bleu. Mais cela lui permet néanmoins d'obtenir une gamme très étendue, passant par les gris et par les bruns. Lorsqu'on lui reproche cette restriction sur sa palette, il répond par la phrase d'André Gide: 'l'art naît des contraintes et meurt de libertés'."
"In the current Martin Barré's painting, white is very important. He limits the other colors to red ocher and blue, but it nevertheless allows him to obtain a very wide range, passing through the grays and the browns. When he is criticized for this restriction on his palette, he responds with André Gide's words: 'art is born of constraints and dies of freedom.'."
