Lot Essay

The present work was commissioned through Gimpel Fils, the artist's agent, by Dr. Straus in 1969. It was purchased from Gimpel Fils in 1970 for $1,800. The artist also gave Dr. Straus his preparatory drawing which is included with this lot.
