Javier Calleja

Javier Calleja was born in 1971 in Málaga, Spain. He is known for his figurative works featuring wide-eyed characters and whimsical imagery, creating a unique blend of innocence and introspection that resonates with a wide audience.

Calleja’s artistic journey began in the realm of design, where he initially trained and worked before fully committing to his passion for fine arts. This background in design is evident in his meticulous approach to composition and his keen sense of visual balance.

The Spanish artist’s practice spans painting, sculpture and works on paper, as well as editioned work and merchandise. Javier Calleja collaborated with BE@RBRICK, highly collectable figures produced by Japanese company MediCom Toy Incorporated, blending contemporary art with popular culture. His works often play with text and imagery to create a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer.

Exhibited in galleries in Madrid, Barcelona, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and other major cities, Calleja’s auction record broke US$1 million for the first time in March 2021. In 2023 Christie’s Hong Kong sold his painting, I DON’T CARE (2020), for HK$10,055,000.
